Women Artists of Kaua‘i’s Paint Our Garden Art Classes and Demonstrations on NTBG‘s ‘Ohana Day, Sunday, January 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Southshore Visitors Center.

Enjoy the day painting The Garden with your choice of two unique art classes by the Women Artists of Kaua‘i. Watercolor Landscapes with Patrice Pendarvis and Painting Exotic Tropical Flowers in Watercolor with Marionette Taboniar will be offered. All materials are provided and beginners are welcome. There is a charge for each class and class size is limited. Pre-registration with the artist is recommended.

Plus, plein air painting demonstrations will be given by pastel artist, Helen Turner and watercolor artist, Emily Miller. All demos are free of charge.

Watercolor, especially combined with ink, feels as if it is a natural medium for me. Demanding attentiveness and delicacy, it holds the promise of unexpected beauty from the interaction of color and surface. Watercolor is low toxicity, portable, and low maintenance."

National Tropical Botanical Garden and the Women Artists of Kaua'i present their 3rd Annual Winter Fine Art Festival on NTBG's 'Ohana Day, Sunday, December 18, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Southshore Visitors Center.

Great holiday fun, food, and live music for all! Gallery quality fine art (great for last minute holiday gifts) will be available in a variety of styles and mediums including paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, mixed media and more from these artists: Anna Skaradzinska, Caylin Spear, Donia Lilly, Lilian de Mello, Patrice Pendarvis, Marionette Taboniar, and Leslie Hagen.

Enjoy live music provided by Mahealani, Dr. Matthew Miller, Bernard Almeida, and Sean Pulawa. Plus smoothies, shave ice and delicious plate lunches will be available from Happy Snacks.

Women Artists of Kaua'i Holiday Fine Art Festival and Fundraiser, Saturday, November 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hanapepe United Church of Christ

Great holiday fun, food, live music, and shopping at the 3rd Annual Holiday Fine Art Festival featuring original paintings, photography, pottery, sculpture, mixed media and more! A portion of the proceeds will go directly to HUCC's Free Community Lunch program offered every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm.

Traditional, soulful, Hawaiian music will be played by Mahealani, and soothing guitar music will be provided by Dr. Matthew Miller. Plus, The HUCC "Lanai Cafe" will be serving sandwiches, soups, salads, baked goods, and beverages.

Participating artists include Anna Skaradzinska, Helen Turner, Marionette Taboniar, Leslie Hagen, Lilian de Mello, Patrice Pendarvis, Susi Strom, Caylin Spear, and Donia Lilly.

Admission to this fun, family event is free. The festival will be located at the Hanapepe United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall which is right next to the Hanapepe library.

Women Artists of Kauai welcomes our newest member, Donia Lilly! She is a mixed media artist working primarily in pastels and acrylics.

"I draw inspiration from what I see around me, but it is my response to my environment and experiences that is most important to my artistic process. I am constantly borrowing lines, shapes, textures, and colors from nature, but use them for my own creative purposes in my paintings and drawings. Whether from memory or imagination, my art is meant to create an emotional sense of place, engulfing the viewer with unconventional beauty."

Women Artists of Kauai is pleased to welcome a new member, Kekaha's own...Caylin Spear! She is a mixed media artist working with oil paint and wax encaustics using found shells or beach glass as well as mixed media watercolor and pencil paintings.

"Landscape is the vantage point at which we are able to judge our existence in this world through mind, body, and spirit. It is not always possible to choose the path our lives take. I was born missing the femur in my right leg. After a traumatic amputation my mother put me into art classes to get my mind off of the pain. My father, who was crippled at birth by polio in his right leg, taught me to surf. I have married these two passions in my everyday life by the ocean."

Welcome Leslie Hagen to Women Artists of Kauai! Leslie sculpts in clay and is most famous for her masks!

" My favorite thing is making sculptures and masks. Especially if they cause a giggle. Whimsical, funny, humorous, thought provoking and somethings bizarre would be appropriate words to describe my work. In between sculptures and masks I hop on the wheel and get lost in a spinning world. All the pieces in my Etsy shop have been hand sculpted, wheel thrown or a combination of both by me. All one of a kind. They are bisque fired and then glazed fired to cone 6. All the functional pieces are food safe. They can also go in the oven or microwave with care. And they can even go in the dishwasher, but like most things will last longer if hand washed."

Women Artists of Kauai welcomes one of our newest members, Dawn Lundquist! Dawn works exclusively with oils on canvas and panel and mostly paints en plein aire where she captures the majesty and tranquility of the ocean and its many moods, the serenity of the green velvet mountains, once so awesome in their volcanic fury, the dawns and sunsets that open and close each day.

Dawn began her art career as a teenager, and a young mother in Boulder, Colorado. Immersed in pottery, sculpture, paper maché, and living in Laguna Beach, California, she was inspired to paint by the supreme marine artist, Anton Gutnecth.

Mostly self-taught, she has been fortunate to be mentored and or inspired by William De Shazo, Anthony Casay, Stephen Sands and Joyce Clark. You will find her work in several hundred private and public collections worldwide, and in fine art galleries throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

Dawn is a multifaceted person who has reached pinnacles in, not one, but four careers; i.e., real estate investor; C.E.O. of a million dollar corporation; published author; and her now chosen career, fine artist. Her 20 years in Hawaii have served as a healing experience, She loves to share her experiences through her art.

an active supporter of the Honolulu Academy since
moving here in 2007 from NY. In New York Kelly
was a successful commercial artist and glass carving
artist for over twenty years, with a successful
line of carved glass furniture sold to galleries and
collectors on the east coast. She belonged to many
art guilds including the prestigious Huntington
Town Art League and South Hampton Art League
and has shown on Long Island for many years till
her arrival here in Hawaii. The colors of our islands
have inspired her to dive into color.

"Wave Riders" Watercolor on Wood

Women Artists of Kauai welcomes another new member, Susan Strom!

Susan (Susi) Strom resides in Wailua, and has been immersed in the Arts from the time she was a very young child. She studied under two Master Painters, one in the Medium of Oil, the other in Watercolor. Because of Susi's deep relationship with water, she gravitated to the medium of Watercolor, and has been a successful painter of landscapes and ocean elements for over 20 years.

Because Susi grew up originally on the beaches and forests of the Puget Sound in Washington State, she was always intrigued by the creative use of natural elements, and began painting on pieces of wood that would wash ashore. "It rained more often than not, where we lived in the Pacific Northwest, so we had to get real creative in order to pass the time. We spent a lot of time outdoors, even in temperamental weather. It could be weeks before the sun came out!" The demand for her work grew, and Susi went on to attend the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico under Special Invitation, and from there worked in nearly every facet of the Art Industry, from coast to coast.

Always searching for innovative applications to incorporate into her chosen medium, Susi currently works with watercolors infused with mica, which gives her paintings a dimensional depth, and luminescent quality. She still prefers to paint on wood base, as has been her whimsical preference since childhood. Her subjects are the many landscapes and settings of her home, the island of Kaua'i. Often the titles of her works are in Hawaiian, to lend full meaning.

Millicent Cummings is a twenty-five year practitioner and promoter of the Arts, award winning singer, songwriter and performer, multi-media visual fine artist, producer, teacher and mother. She holds a degree in painting from Parsons School of Design in New York City graduating in 1990 and has shown her visual work in both one-woman and group exhibitions across the country. Cummings was founder and curator of her own gallery and has taught both music and art in numerous different contexts from the Kaua'i Academy of Creative Arts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Angela has been working in the field of art for 30 years as an artist, teacher, designer, consultant, and gallery owner. Painting and exhibiting in the continental U.S., and the Hawaiian Islands, she has also studied and painted in France, Italy, Mexico, Fiji, and Tahiti. She is currently focusing on the Hawaiian Islands. However, she does take breaks to paint the different color palette landscapes of other countries.

"I have been studying art and painting for 30 years, and I'm still evolving and developing. This is a limitless learning curve with many wonderful experiences included. To that end I have been fortunate to study with many talented artists and learn from them all."

We had quite the turnout for our Women Artists of Kauai Holiday Fine Art Festival and Fundraiser Saturday, November 28, 2009. Momi from Nana's House was quite surprised and elated as I presented her with our gift. being—something raw, natural. I am utterly passionate about the sacred quality of a pose. My art is an act of discovery—a necessary surrender to outcome. I search for the real—my people have to be in their element. A pretty face? I couldn’t care less."

"There is in my relationship to my work this: That single moment you want to embrace—like the mother and child—and then it is (they are) gone. I snap my fingers--the moment is gone. My sculpture represents those moments we cannot hold onto. To me, that is what is most sacred—the fleeting connection of souls."

NTBG and WAK Winter Fine Art Festival

National Tropical Botanical Garden and Women Artists of Kauai Winter Fine Art Festival, Saturday, December 19, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Southshore Visitors Center Meadow

Visit the Gardens during December’s ‘Ohana Day and be treated to a unique display and sale of one of a kind, gallery quality art pieces, reproductions, gift items and ornaments created by some of Kauai’s most talented fine artists. A portion of the sales from all the thirteen participating WAK artists during this event will benefit NTBG.

This fun, outdoor in the garden, family event will also feature live music by guitarist, Dr. Matthew Miller, harpist, Anela, and blues musician, Blue Dux. Savage Shrimp and Pohaku Shave Ice will be selling their tasty treats, and NTBG’s volunteer craft group, Oshibana, will be offering their hand-crafted products for purchase.

A Toys for Tots drop off box, provided by the Women Artists of Kauai, will be available under the tents. Bring a brand new, unwrapped toy, and the first twenty donations will receive a special “Holiday Mahalo Gift” from the artists.

Participating artists include Helen Turner, Rocky Riedel, Dava Shepherd, Aweepano Vivian Satow, Robin McCoy, Marionette, Anna Skaradzinska, Schar Freeman, Emily Miller, Lilian de Mello, Patrice Pendarvis, Jana Viles, and Leslie Tribolet.

Admission to the event is free. Please park in the Visitors Center parking lot. The festival will be located on the front lawn immediately to the left (west) of the main entrance gate, under the Monkey Pod trees. Celebrate the beginning of the holiday season with a Fine Art Festival and Fundraiser for Nana's House featuring the Women Artists of Kauai. Highlights of the festival include live Hawaiian style music by Kenny Kealoulu Keliihoomalu, painting demonstrations, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, reproductions, gift items, and ornaments. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to Nana's House which is a family support center provided by Child and Family Service, serving West Kauai.

I took these photos at the Puakea Golf Course...It is an old plantation home, now empty and sadly in disrepair, but nevertheless has a haunting charm all its own...

I couldn't believe it when I saw that a badly broken set of windows on the second floor actually still had drapes in it ~ Gave me the feeling that someone's mama would be calling them in for dinner any minute!

This scene made me think of days gone by ~ Days spent sitting on the veranda with a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade...It also made me sad. Sad of what these once-proud French doors have become ~ broken glass and hanging by a hinge...
Yet, somehow, I think back again to lazy days on a new whitewashed veranda and a porch swing and those doors are back on their brass hinges; beveled panes of glass shining crystal clear in the summer sun...

As we rounded the corner and looked up, this window reminded my husband and I of every one of "those windows" appearing in every horror movie house we've ever seen ~ You know the ones - At any minute a freakish face will appear and you will know BIG trouble is about to happen...
